3 (Tamil movie) - Suffers from bipolar disorder

For all those who have been living under a rock the past 1 year, 3 is the movie which features India's first viral  hit - "Kolaveri Di". The movie has generated huge expectations partly due to the people involved - National award winning actor Dhanush, Superstar Rajinikanth's daughter Aishwarya and acting legend Kamal Hasan's daughter Shruti Hasan - and mostly due to the super hit song of Kolaveri. I too loved the song and the promos and was eagerly awaiting to watch the movie. I managed to book tickets (went with family) quite easily on saturday evening (first warning!!!) and was quite surprised.

I arrived at the theater 10 mins early (thunder , rain!!!), bought some waist busting junk food like popcorn, puffs and parked myself on the seat awaiting a spectacle to unfold.

The Plot (Spoiler Alert)

The movie opens with a funeral and it is later understood that the person who died is Ram (Dhanush). His wife Janani (Shruti) weeps and the rest of the story is narrated as a series of flashbacks. The title of the movie signifies the three phases of life that the lead characters spend together - 1) Courtship period between Ram and Janani, 2) Marriage 3) Tragedy. Ram belongs to a rich family and Janani to a middle class family that aspires to settle in US. In the first phase , Ram falls in love with Janani (the usual love at first sight) and pursues her till she accepts his proposal. In the second phase, Ram and Janani get married against their parents wishes but Ram's father supports him financially by buying him a flat. Life is smooth and the parents eventually reconcile to their children's choice of life partner. In the third phase it is revealed that Ram suffers from bipolar disorder and his friend helps him get diagnized  and also undergo treatment. But Ram's condition gets worse and he fears that his wife might reject him due to his illness. He hides the truth and commits suicide.

Analysis

The movie itself suffers from bipolar disorder. The first half was quite enjoyable and the acting was spot on. The second half is the problem. The first half had such a cute love story and the chemistry between the lead pairs so spectacular that your expectations shoots up towards the interval. Both Dhanush and Shruti are entirely believable as 12th std students and their interactions are laced with sparkling dialogue, excellent BGM and relatable scenes. Then the movie falls apart with plot holes so big that you can drive a car through.   I feel the second half was shot in a hurry to cash in on the Kolaveri mania because nothing can explain how a director who has paid a great deal of attention to detail in the first half just forgot even the most basic rules of story telling. Tying mangalsutra in a night club, a friend detecting the hero's disorder but his wife does not, the lead pairs getting cozy in front of the friend, silly scenes showing the hero's disorder are just some of the most frivolous screenplay errors to hit the silver screen in recent memory. The second half is as bad as the first is good. Its like one is watching two movies with no continuity.

Performance

Dhanush though has done a great job, his acting looks very repetitive to his other movies. He is getting stereotyped as a psycho and he must pick up other roles quickly. Shruti is good to look at and has talent to go the distance but unfortunately she is terrible in the second half. Her performance is the biggest drawback of the second half and she wails loud and bucketful many a times. Her crying scenes get repetitive (there are five scenes where she cries open mouthed with no tears) and gets on your nerves. I felt like walking away from the theater seeing her wail. The rest of the support cast is too minimal to mention. Aishwarya Dhanush should have done a lot more homework on the disorder and treated it with more finesse. The second half is plain amateurish and seems to have been done in a hurry.

The real hero of the movie is Anirudh and the music/BGM is a treat to the ears. If not for his music the movie would have been unbearable.

Verdict : 1.5/5. Watch the movie but make sure you leave after the interval.

  1. Have u suffered from any kind of disorder. Im suffering from a mental illness. Aishwarya has taken it perfectly well in second half of story.
Since u dont know about mental illness , you are not able to understand how a person feels with disorder.
Hats off to Aishwarya she has taken the movie well, especially the second half portion.
